Luke 6:21

Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh.

The Beatitudes are some of the most universally respected verses of Scripture in the modern world. Biblical scholars have spent centuries diving into the meaning behind them. Some of the most impactful words I've heard on the subject came from Dr. Peter Kreeft, although whether the thoughts he shared originated with him; I don't know. He called attention to the present blessedness of those who are currently suffering. The hungry, for example, will be satisfied in the future but even in their present hunger they are called blessed. Why is that? What's so blessed about hunger or suffering in general? In experiencing them we become ever more aware of our need for God. That recognition leads us to seek his face in a way that someone who has never gone without can't understand. That seeking is the way of holiness. In it we grow closer to what he wants us to be until we finally find what we've truly been hungry for, union with God in Heaven.
