I came into the world as light, so that everyone who believes in me might not remain in darkness.
Have you ever woken up in a pitch black room in the middle of the night? It's unnerving isn't it? You soon realize that you see no more of your surroundings with your eyes open than you do with them closed. Assuming you don't have a lamp you can easily turn on from your bed, getting up and ambling toward the light switch can be an ordeal. Your move slowly and deliberately, your arms extended outward - hoping they touch something familiar so you can orient yourself. When you finally reach the switch, turn it on, and see clearly how small the distance you just traveled was, you realize two things: 1) Navigating a room takes a whole lot longer and is significantly more tedious in the dark 2) You really need to buy a lamp. Just like trying to walk in the dark, living in sin can slow and even paralyze our spiritual walk. Even small sins can cast shadows on our way and cause us to lag behind as we try to follow Jesus. But just like someone with a lantern leading us on a path at night, the way is clearer the closer we are to His light... that is, to Him.
