1 John 5: 20-21
And we also know that the Son of God has come and has given us discernment to know the one who is true. And we are in the one who is true, in his son Jesus Christ. He is the true God and eternal life. Children, be on your guard against idols.
To be away from it all. What does that mean to you? There used to be a commercial about a bath soap and the slogan was : "Calgon, take me away!" As a young child I always wondered where that woman wanted to go so badly and why. As an adult now I analyze why I sometimes feel like I want to "get away" so badly and where it is I want to go.
For this new year, as we decide how we spend our time, where we go and how we "get away", I pray for the gift of right discernment. With instant communication we have lots of instant distraction. We can slip into the world of imagination, false reality and even false idols with the tap of a screen.
We need to keep our eyes and hearts focused on what is actually real. Jesus is real. We already have everything we need in Christ Jesus. He tells us how we should live and He has given us the promise eternal life. So next time I feel the need to "get away" I will pray and ask for right discernment. I will make a list of what is stressful to me and pray over it. I will try to look forward to what's ahead rather than run from it.
