FOCUS!

By Abby
What if Peter had been holding an iPhone when he asked Jesus to call on him?

Matthew 14:28-29

Peter said to him in reply, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water." He said, "Come." Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.

Have you ever been in the middle of a conversation with someone and have them pick up their phone to read a text or check their Twitter feed? Ouch. We are so easily distracted and pulled to that little machine. What if Peter had been holding an iPhone when he asked Jesus to call on him? Would he have heard Jesus say Come and then felt his phone buzz, look down and start laughing at a meme from a friend? Can you imagine Jesus, standing there on the water, waves crashing and he's like, Seriously, Peter? Is that more important that the miracle I'm about to show you? FOCUS!

I know I've asked Jesus to speak to me and I've heard that voice - either through a word from a friend, a word in scripture or just that feeling of peace. Yes - I feel like Jesus has spoken to me- amazing huh? You probably have too. But what did I do? Many times, I got distracted and didn't do "it." I move on to something else. I wonder if someday I'll see the list of times God has reached my heart only to be pushed aside by a distraction. If there is a list, I want it to stop growing. I hope you do too. So how do we do it? Not sure. Maybe start by actually putting the phone down. Put it on silent so it won't buzz and lure you. Turn off the TV an hour early once a week and just be in the house without the artificial noise. Cut back on one activity that is causing your schedule to be overbooked. And when you hear Him say Come, take a step before life gets in the way - even a tiny one because that's where the journey starts.
