Galatians 5:1
Brothers and Sisters, for freedom Christ set us free; so stand firm and do not submit again to the yoke of slavery
A yoke is a device that is placed on the neck of animals to use their strength as a source of power in order to pull a plow. Strength and power are two things I like to think I have. I want to be strong and I like being in control of what's around me. Why would I give away my strength and power over to someone else to use to their advantage? I wouldn't, at least not knowingly.
What are ways we enslave ourselves, and essentially "give away" our source power and self control? The answer may be different for each of us, but we can all probably think of something. For some of us it may be too much idle time, for others it may be too much unnecessary time spent worrying about work.
This verse reminds me that when we are able to stand firm rooted in Christ, we can enjoy our freedom. And we must take care not to "give ourselves away" to things that will erode our Christ centered roots.
