A Leaky Vessel

By John Morris
Here's the thing. All of us have leaks...

Jeremiah 2:13

"They have dug themselves cisterns, broken cisterns that hold no water."

God is ticked at the Jews.  Jeremiah writes that the Lord is mad because the people have committed two evils:  forsaken Him and put their trust in some other god.  He compares this trust in Baal to a broken cistern that can hold no water.  Have you ever been in a leaky boat, or had a bicycle tire that had a slow leak?  I have on both occasions.  It's not a comfortable journey because mentally you know it could fail at any time.  The leaky could get larger and swamp the boat.  When the tire goes flat, you're stranded. Ugh.  It's mentally taxing, causes more work for you and impacts or inconveniences others.

In life, we sometimes put our trust in other people that we've grown to see as 'leaky vessels.'  They often mean well but don't always come through.  Other times they show that they can be trusted, but really they'll fail you in the end.  That can be very frustrating and lead to breaks in friendships, work relationships and even marriages.  Here's the thing...most all of us have leaks.  We are all leaky vessels in some ways.  Those leaks are caused by sin.  Some of us have huge holes while others have small ones....but we all have them.  The beauty is that we can fix them.  Sure, they are often temporary plugs because sinful habits can be hard to break.  We have to really pray and become stronger to fix those sinful ways on a more permanent basis--welding them shut.  Prayer, reconcilitation and mercy are a great way to start.
