ATHENS, Greece (AP) -- Bitter cold, biting winds and rough winter seas have done little to stem the seemingly endless flow of desperate people fleeing war or poverty for what they hope will be a brighter, safer future in Europe. As 2016 dawns, boatloads continue to reach Greek shores and thousands trudge across Balkan fields and country roads heading north....

Vatican City, Jan 1, 2016 / 05:38 am (CNA/EWTN News).- The miseries of the world are powerless against the mercy of God, whose entrance into history brought about a new era for humanity, Pope Francis said at the opening Mass of the new year.“History does not determine the birth of Christ; rather, his coming into the world enables history to attain its fullness,” the Pope said in his homily Friday morning in Saint Peter’s Basilica.“For this reason, the birth of the Son of God inaugurates a new era, a new computation of time, the era which witnesses the fulfilment of the ancient promise.”Pope Francis delivered these remarks during Mass for the solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, which is celebrated each year on Jan. 1.In his homily, the Pope centered his reflection on the day’s second reading from Saint Paul to the Galatians which speaks of God having been “born of a woman” in the “fullness of time.”Taking into account that mom...
(Vatican Radio) One of the many Church leaders present for the Mass and Angelus in New Year’s Day was Cardinal Edwin O’Brien, Archbishop-emeritus of Baltimore, Maryland, in the United States, and the current Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.Cardinal O’Brien spoke with us about the importance of the Mother of God, whose liturgical solemnity the Church celebrates on January 1st, in concurrence with the World Day of Peace. “It’s a worldwide celebration for peace, and a worldwide recognition of the role of Our Lady in the Church, and in the whole state of humanity: she gave us a Savior; she is a great example, a great model,” he said, “and all generations call her blessed.”Reflecting on Pope Francis’ assertion that peace must be “conquered” and that the conquest of peace involves primarily a spiritual battle within each of us, Cardinal O’Brien said, “We can’t &lsq...
(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis renewed his calls for peace and goodwill throughout the Earth on Friday, New Year’s Day, the Solemnity of the Mother of God and the World Day of Peace. The Holy Father’s appeal came at the Angelus prayer with pilgrims and visitors gathered in St. Peter’s Square after Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica. “Today we celebrate the World Day of Peace, whose theme is: ‘Overcome Indifference and win Peace’,” said Pope Francis. “That peace, which God the Father wants to sow in the world, must be cultivated by us,” he continued. “Not only: it must also be ‘conquered’. This involves a real struggle, a spiritual battle that takes place in our hearts, for the enemy of peace is not only war, but also indifference, which makes us think only of ourselves and creates barriers, suspicions, fears and closures [of mind and heart].”Pope Francis went on to say, “We have, thank God, much info...

(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis delivered the homily at Mass on New Year's Day, the Solemnity of the Mother of God, in St. Peter's Basilica. Below, please find the full text of the official English translation of his prepared remarks.******************************************Homily of His Holiness Pope Francis on the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of GodWorld Day of Peace, 1 January 2016We have heard the words of the Apostle Paul: “When the fullness of time had come, God sent his Son, born of a woman” (Gal 4:4).What does it mean to say that Jesus was born in “the fullness of time”?  If we consider that particular moment of history, we might quickly be deluded.  Rome had subjugated a great part of the known world by her military might.  The Emperor Augustus had come to power after five civil wars.  Israel itself had been conquered by the Roman Empire and the Chosen People had lost their freedom.  For Jesus’ contempora...
