Mexico City, Mexico, Feb 12, 2016 / 04:38 am (CNA/EWTN News).- Archbishop Rogelio Cabrera López of Monterrey has asked the entire community to unite in prayer in response to the riot that took place at a local prison that left a tragic toll of 52 dead and 12 injured.“We want to invite the entire community to join us in prayer for our brothers who are inmates and for their families, who are going through anguished moments,” the archbishop said in a statement.The riot took place in the early morning Feb. 11 at the Topo Chico prison located in Monterrey in Mexico’s northern Nuevo Leon State.Nuevo Leon Gov. Jaime Rodríguez Calderón confirmed to CNN the number of dead. He indicated there were no women or children among them. (Vatican Radio) Vatican Radio on Friday celebrated its 85th birthday.On February 12, 1931, Guglielmo Marconi – credited with the invention of radio – introduced Pope Pius XI to listeners around the word.“I have the highest honor of announcing that in only a matter of seconds the Supreme Pontiff, Pope Pius XI, will inaugurate the Radio Station of the Vatican City State,” Marconi said. “The electric radio waves will transport to all the world his words of peace and blessing.”Pope Pius XI then read out a Latin text about the Gospel message.He concluded with these words:  “Listen, O Heavens, to that which I say; listen, O Earth, listen to the words which come from my mouth...Listen and hear, O Peoples of distant lands!”To mark this anniversary, Vatican Radio has added several videos to its Youtube channel, including the speeches by Pope Pius XI and Marconi.

(Vatican Radio) The Pope's visit to a jail in the Mexican border city of Juarez is going ahead, in spite of a riot at another Northern Mexican jail in which 49 inmates died. Listen to the report by James Blears: Pope Francis' visit to the prison in Juarez will involve contact with inmates, some of whom have been jailed for narcotics related crimes. The “Centro de Readaptación Social No. 3” is part of an effort to reorganize the prison system of the State of Chihuahua. The prison, which has approximately 3,000 inmates, has achieved accreditation under international prison standards.
