Beloved:
Remain faithful to what you have learned and believed,
because you know from whom you learned it,
and that from infancy you have known the sacred Scriptures,
Is it possible to unlearn something like we can unfriend someone? I hope not. I worry we are too superficial. There are times when we need to dig deep and understand there are vital human elements that tie all of us together. I'd like to think that mutual respect for a person's personal dignity no matter who they are is an example. We all know that is violated but we can make sure that we respect God given human life in all of its stages, from the preborn, to the aged and infirmed. This is critical to respecting the human person's dignity as God intended.
In the political arena I have heard many disturbing remarks, disrespectful and undiginified. Instead of uniting us, these remarks are causing division and suspicion. Are we surprised? Do not let yourselves "unlearn" what you know is true. It is important for us as Christians to remain faithful, to revisit our fundamental truths of respecting life, understanding that from the very roots of our humanity, our Living God has been there, teaching us, patiently waiting for us to reach out to Him and turn our hearts and minds and words to what we have known "from infancy", that is we should respect one another as we respect ourselves, that we should place God first in our lives, and pray to Him daily and in our time of need.
