At that statement his face fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.
I have always wondered what happened to this guy. I have heard many people preach on this passage of the Gospels and they always talk about this rich man turning away from God never to return again. I guess I'm kind of the eternal optimist because because I always think "what if he went away sad because he knew what he had to do?" What if he did sell all that he had and followed Jesus? There was never a follow up on this guy in the Gospels so this will remain one of the questions I have to ask Jesus when I see him!
If I look at my life I can honestly say there have been many times I walked away from Jesus sad about something I had to give up. And there is nothing wrong with that. I am constantly being convicted and challenged in my faith. I am rarely happy about the changes that I need to make in my behavior or lifestyle in order to be a good follower of Jesus. But that doesn't mean I'm a bad person. It just means I'm human. Sometimes I just have to go wrestle with my humanity for a little while. The coolest thing about God's grace is that he is always standing there waiting for us to come back after we walk away. If you have been away wrestling for a while just remember that He is waiting.
