Two by Four

By Davis
After all the commotion stopped there was a quietness, in the NAB it's called "a light silent sound". That's where Elijah found God. Yeah, that's never been me....

Acts 9:8

Saul got up from the ground, but when he opened his eyes he could see nothing; so they led him by the hand and brought him to Damascus.

Have you ever read the passage in 1 Kings 19 where Elijah was on the mountain and God promised he would be present for him? Elijah heard a loud wind and even an earthquake, but God wasn't in either of those. After all the commotion stopped there was a quietness, in the NAB it's called "a light silent sound". That's where Elijah found God. Yeah, that's never been me. God has always had to make as much noise as possible to get my attention. I use to tell the teens in my youth group that God had to speak to me through a Two by Four.

Because of that I have always felt a kindred spirit with Paul. I was never a murderer mind you, it's just that I am hard headed. While everyone around me is seeing signs and hearing God's "still small voice", there He was banging away with a two by four on my head. The story of Paul's conversion has always been a powerful one for me. If God can redeem this murderer who was persecuting the followers of Christ surely he can forgive me. No matter how hard headed I have been in my life God has never had to strike me blind to get my attention! God had a plan for Saul but he had to become Paul before it could be seen. God has a plan for me, and sometimes He still uses a two by four to make that plan clear. God has a plan for you too. What is getting in between you and God's plan today? Are you feeling hard headed at the moment or can you hear God's still small voice?
