Toolbox and Hardhat

2 Timothy 2:15

Be eager to present yourself as acceptable to God, a workman who causes no disgrace, imparting the word of truth without deviation.

You've probably seen some of the tv commercials for trucks where the rugged workman climbs out of his truck in a hard hat and lunch pail, all in slo-mo with song, "Like a Rock," in the background.   The depiction is a hard-working man, doing a dirty job with the tools and truck necessary to get the job done.  It's supposed to inspire you to buy a truck.  There's also the expression in sports lingo, "He/she has a workman-like attitude," which is to mean that they do the dirty work and get the job done without complaint.

Today's reading from 2nd Timothy talks about being a "workman" acceptable to God.  Being a Christian today is not easy, and working for the kingdom is even tougher.  I'm not talking about being employed by the Church, but just working in your job to spread the Good News. What about in your neighborhood? What about even at church itself?  There are a lot of people that go to church faithfully, but don't really have a relationship with Jesus Christ.  As Christians, we have to be diligent in our efforts, faithful in our prayer and an outward example in our work so that people know we are Christians by our love and attitude.  Our hardhat is prayer, our tool is the bible and our coworkers are the Church.  Be a diligent worker today so that you might be acceptable to God!
