Till Death Do Us Part

By Abby
Are you married to an angel?

Mark 12: 25

When they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but they are like the angels in heaven.

Are you married to an angel?

Maybe that made you laugh out loud. Maybe it made your heart warm up and go pitter patter. Most likely, your reaction just depends on the day.

In today's gospel, Jesus reminds us of the greater goal of marriage: to lead one another to heaven. He tells the Sadducees who were trying to corner him with a twisted line of questioning that our life is beyond this world and its limitations. Forget about who will belong to whom; You'll be like an angel!

I watched 10 minutes of The Bachelorette the other night. I regret that decision. I repeat. I regret that decison. There's a lot of talk on the show about what everyone is looking for in a spouse and most say - a partner in life who will make me happy and whom I can make happy. Surprisingly (sarcasm font needed), no one said "I'm looking for someone to help me become holy."

Are you viewing your marriage (or future marriage) with a that same short-sighted vision? Or do you see your spouse as a saint-in-the-making? If we only see marriage as a means to happiness and fulfillment now, we will constantly fall short. Helping your spouse become a saint, or like the angels that Jesus mentions, is the end game. What does that look like? Encouraging one another to pray and read the bible. Sacrificing ourselves for one another daily. Forgiving. Serving.  Why not take a moment every night - 2 minutes even, to pray with and for each other (sure, you can do it silently) and really reflect on whether or not you have your eyes on the greater goal of marriage. Quick final note - It's possible that you're saying - "Who are you, Abby to give marriage advice?" Well, first, I didn't come up with this idea. And second, I've learned a lot in the past few years. A lot. I believe in the sacrament of Marriage and want to do what I can to encourage others in it.
