The Timbre of the Cymbal

1 Corinthians 12:31-13:1

"If I speak in human or angelic tongues, but do not have love, I am a resounding gong or clashing cymbal."

In an orchestra the crashing of cymbals is heard above all the instruments and typically represents a clash, revelry with lots of energy that comes together with their sound. To be heard above a full orchestra is impressive. In our daily lives, we have probably had moments where we wanted to be heard like that cymbal. But I dare say we probably don't always have the timbre, the unique sound that comes from a musical instrument that makes it special.

The other day I wanted to offer constructive criticism but I became so stuck on presenting my point of view that my criticism turned cynical.  And I still fumed afterwards even when I recognized that I needed to let it go, that what I was trying to say fell on deaf ears.

There are times we need to be heard. We need to be able to offer advice, and teach our Christian love, but if we don't pray first and ask the Holy Spirit for guidance we may end up sounding like a clashing cymbal.  Our words will most likely not be understood.  Those around us need to hear God's message.  Why can't we be the ones He uses to lend this message to others?

The answer is that we can if we but pray about how we are to speak, and how we are to love.
