The Record Scratch in your Life

By Abby
In a modern setting, I imagine the disciples sitting with Jesus around a big granite counter top in a kitchen. He's getting the meal ready...

John 13:21
When he had said this, Jesus was deeply troubled and testified, "Amen, amen, I say to you, one of you will betray me."

In a modern setting, I imagine the disciples sitting with Jesus around a big granite counter top in a kitchen. He's getting the meal ready. They have Spirit FM playing in the background. Then Jesus says this line "One of you will betray me." RECORD SCRATCH! How they were listening to Spirit FM on a record, I have no idea.

These men were expecting a military leader; they got a man who spoke of loving enemies and washing the feet of people who serve them. Then this man who they came to believe was the Messiah tells them one of their own would become a traitor. At this point, I would've spoken up and said, "This is totally not going the way I thought it would!"

What a great lesson for all of us. When life doesn't go the way you planned, how do you react? Jesus gave us the perfect example. He knew Judas would betray him, but did he skip over him when he washed everyone's feet? Nope. He loved him in the form of serving him. When John asked him who was going to betray him, Jesus could've said, "Judas is the traitor," but instead he hands him a bite to eat. Again, he serves. He shares.

When life takes a turn that we don't expect due to betrayal, hard times, illness or just disappointment, Jesus tells us to love, to serve and to remain faithful. Research has shown that giving our time and helping others is a effective way to fight against mild depression. So get out and serve and show the world that things don't have to go the way IT says it should.
