The Eye of the Earthquake

By Abby
I remember one rainy day I was walking with then-infant Liam out of Wal-Mart. I slipped on a wet painted line in the parking lot and went down...

Matthew 8: 23-24

He got into a boat and his disciples followed him. Suddenly a violent storm came up on the sea, so that the boat was being swamped by waves; but he was asleep.

Last week I shared a thought from a blogger on the site ILoveDevotionals.com. Wendy is a great writer. Check it out when you have a moment. She was pondering what she might have done had she been in Jesus' sandals when he fed the multitude with 5 loaves and 2 fish. She figured maybe she would've held onto a bite for herself and reasoned that she had some preaching left to do so she'd need her strength. But that's not what Jesus did. He didn't worry about Himself. He knew He was taken care of because of who He belongs to. There is a sense of security in knowing we belong to our Heavenly Father.

I can't think of a better illustration of this in scripture than today's verses. Before you think, "I like sleeping on a rainy night" let me tell you the word "storm" used here actually translates to "earthquake." Yet here is Jesus - snoozing. Why? Because His peace, strength and security is found in God so there was no need to worry, even when the boat was rocking and others were panicking.

I remember one rainy day I was walking with then-infant Liam out of Wal-Mart. I slipped on a wet painted line in the parking lot and went down. My one hand hit the ground, but the other held onto my son and he wasn't anywhere close to getting hurt. Involuntarily, my body protected my child. God won't let you go. He won't let you hit the ground. Even in the midst of the storm, you are safe in his arms.
