Indeed, the word of God is living and effective, sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflections and thoughts of the heart.
Have you ever had to have a surgical procedure? My biggest surgery was having my wisdom teeth extracted. Getting cut into is no fun at all. But it's what is best for the patient. Studying God's word can be like having soul surgery. It convicts us in our sin and digs deep into our soul in order to remove it. It's often a very painful process. But in the end we know that removing that sin from our lives will make things better. I remember my first few soul surgeries very well. Boy did it take me a while to recover from those! Have you ever had the experience of people who hear God's truth and get really angry and defensive almost immediately" You think "wow, what's wrong with them?". Remember this verse and realize they are being cut into their very soul. Let's all take a minute to reflect on our own soul surgeries and remember to be patient with those around us who may be experiencing one right now.
