Sometimes You've Just Gotta Move!

The Feast of the Visitation

Luke 1: 39-40

During those days Mary set out and traveled to the hill country in haste to a town of Judah, where she entered the house of Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.

This past weekend my boys and I spent three beautiful days at a hotel pool. It was a great pool - A lazy river, water falls, drinks with umbrellas and music that comes out of the bushes. We were all sitting around chatting and my older one, Liam said, "Everybody! Wait. Listen!" A song he loves came on and he dropped everything, ran out so he could have enough room and started dancing. He had to move!

The Feast of the Visitation is a bit like that. Mary, newly pregnant was so excited to share the news with her cousin Elizabeth AND share in Elizabeth's miracle, that she went "in haste" to see her. It wasn't a short or easy trip but she took it, quickly. Then when she and Elizabeth greeted each other, neither was concerned with their own personal agenda, only acknowledging what God was doing in their lives. Just like Liam couldn't keep from dancing when his song came on and didn't care about anything else, the Spirit was moving and they (including John the Baptist, in Elizabeth's womb) couldn't be still.

The truth is, when Jesus is growing within you, either as a new Christian or as one who is learning and growing, you will be led. Sometimes to a person, other times a place. You might be prompted to say and do things that aren't "normal." You might apologize when others think it's the weak thing to do. You might be that weird guy who tells people you love them. Maybe you'll speak uncomfortable truth to tell a friend something they are doing is wrong. I've experienced this before and it's an amazing, indescribable feeling to know that you are cooperating and moving where God wants you to go. I can't say I've always known when it was the right time and I also can't say I've always moved when told to move, but I'm working on it. If only it was as clear as music coming out of the bushes! But let's try to be more like Mary (and Liam). Say YES to Christ growing with in you and when the Spirit moves you, MOVE!
