Matthew 12:41
At the judgment, the men of Nineveh will arise with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and there is something greater than Jonah here.
Have you ever had one of those moments when you said something and just as it's coming out of your mouth you think "man, that's the wrong thing to say right now"? I bet that is what the Pharisee was thinking when Jesus responded to his question in this passage. It seemed like a simple enough request, show me a sign. I've asked God for a sign many times. But in response Jesus seems to be slapping him in the face. He's saying I'm right here, I should be all the sign you need. Even the wicked people of Nineveh repented the minute they heard Jonah. And you are looking for proof!
I don't know about you but sometimes I'm like this Pharisee, I just need a slap in the face to remind me that God is right here with me every day. Why are you missing out on God's presence in your life today? Self pity? Worshiping Idols? (money, prestige, that shiny new thing you need) Pride? Whatever it is I would encourage you to set it aside and recognise God's presence in your life. Before he lumps you in with the "evil and unfaithful generation" (Mt 12:39).
