Shakin' It Up

Matthew 9:14

The disciples of John approached Jesus and said, "Why do we and the Pharisees fast much, but your disciples do not fast?"

Here's a couple of classic lines in most households that have more than one child, "How come she gets to go but I don't?"  "Why does he always get what he wants but I don't?"  Or from the parents, "Why don't you act right like your sister?"   It even translates to work:  "How come they get the new computer but I don't?" or, "How come they always get the special tickets, but we don't?"

Initially today's gospel reading sounds like this.  In fact, often in the New Testament, the Pharisees often question Jesus, in fact, try to trap him on questions.  Today Jesus challenges the traditional ways of fasting.  The Jews were doing the same things over and over again in their fasting to the point that it became routine.  Jesus challenges them to do something new, something different, to stretch themselves.  Earlier in Matthew's Gospel (ch 6) Jesus instructions include prayer, fasting and almsgiving, all new forms of sacrifice for the Jews.  Jesus is the new life and he is regenerating the Church that is known in that time.  He's not just adjusting ways to fast, but reasons for it and a whole new way to do it.  This lent, stretch to new levels of fasting, prayer and almsgiving.  Then you will discover a greater sense of God's love for you (and you for him) and your fellow man.
