Real News...That's Good!

By John Morris
Do you know how to tell the good news from what might be...

Acts 8:40

Philip came to Azotus, and went about proclaiming the good news to all the towns until he reached Caesarea.

Today's news cycle is fast…faster than in any time in history. We have so many stories that hit us, especially in social media. Much of this news is bad news, full of controversy, war, resentment, societal ills, etc. Some of these stories can drag on, sometimes weeks at a time…they captivate us. Eventually they burn out and something new come into view. Even the term 'fake news' has become part of our lexicon. It is a sad state indeed trying to believe each story that comes to us. So how does this impact our daily Christian walk?

We are still in the Easter season and excitement is spreading throughout the land about this man called Jesus who died on the cross, was buried and has risen as he said. People have seen this and word is spreading. Part 2 of Luke's gospel, we know as Acts, continues today with Philip telling a traveler about the life of Jesus. This person was so moved, he wanted to be baptized immediately, so Philip happily obliged. One takeaway from this story of Philip and the Ethiopian was that the story of the promise of everlasting life was such powerful news that it was incredible and nearly unbelievable. The news cycle is still going strong 2000 years later. If it weren't for the storytelling of the gospels, the teachings of the church over the centuries, the bible printing, and even our parents and grandparents teaching us these stories, then the truth would have been lost in the sands of time. So where does that leave you and me? We have a great responsibility to pass on the faith to our children, to our communities, to the people we encounter. Otherwise the faith, the truth, dies with us. Statistics say that church numbers are dwindling, that each year, less people follow a Christian faith. So who's fault is that? No matter how hard it might be, we are compelled to pass along the faith. That's what this radio ministry is trying to do and what you and I should be doing.
