Promises, Promises

By Davis
Have you ever made a promise you knew you were not going to keep...

Matthew 23:22

one who swears by heaven swears by the throne of God and by him who is seated on it.

I really hate to do this to you but here is an ear worm for you. Sorry I just can't help myself, I am after all a child of the 80's. Have you ever made a promise you knew you were not going to keep? It happens all the time. We make little promises (to our kids, our spouse, coworkers, even the boss) knowing full well we will not follow through. In this passage of Matthew we find Jesus talking to the pharisees and scribes about the triviality of their promises. They believed that if you made an oath to God it couldn't be broken. So they started looking for ways to convince people their promises meant something even though they were going to break them. They built a little hierarchy of things they could swear by, their head, the ground, the temple, each item had a different level of ease by which they could break that oath. But Jesus was having none of that. He pointed out that everything they were swearing by ultimately belongs to God therefore they are always swearing an oath before God. Earlier in this Gospel he spells the message out clearly. "Say, 'Yes' when you mean 'Yes' and 'No' when you mean 'No'." (full reference Matthew 5:33-37) My challenge today is to look at my life and see where I am splitting hairs like the scribes and pharisees? How am I trying to back out of my promises to God?
