Once Upon A Time

Acts 13:15

After the reading of the law and the prophets, the synagogue officials sent word to them, "My brothers, if one of you has a word of exhortation for the people, please speak."

I admit that I can draw out a story.  If something happened that needs some detail or commentary, I can get long-winded and detailed.  Usually I can pick up on the vibe my audience is putting out by their expressions and non-verbal cues. That's when I know to wrap it up.  Also, I'm not a very good joke teller.  I usually blow the punch line or the timing is off.  I've also been on the audience side, where I'm thinking, "please can you get to the point!" Usually I politely listen but may have zoned out.  It probably sounds like I'm not good at interpersonal communication. I need work!

It's interesting that throughout the scriptures we hear God using various messengers or storytellers that may not have been equipped or felt capable of delivering the "goods."  We hear of leaders like Moses, David, John the Baptist, and Paul among many, who had that own faults, fears and deficiencies.  Yet God called them to something greater.  In today's reading from Acts, Paul was asked to speak to the Jews in the synagogue.  Here was somebody who, not too long ago, was condemning Christians and working for the temple leaders to crush this rebellion.  Now he's asked to preach for it.   Sometimes we're asked to stand up for what we believe, to state our cause, even though it might cause us harm or have us lose standing in our jobs or with our friends or neighbors.  Ask God to give you strength to be messenger for Christ today in your job, in your family, in your neighborhood, and in your church community.  Being a good listener and knowing your audience will help you become a great friend and Christian leader!
