Luke 8:2-3
Accompanying him were the Twelve and some women who had been cured of evil spirits and infirmities…and many others who provided for them out of their resources.
In today's gospel from Luke, we find Jesus and the twelve going from village to village preaching, teaching and healing. The author also says that a number of women came along and even named a number of them…Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Suzanna and many others. It must have been important to mention this in the scriptures, for at that time, this wasn't the custom. Not only did they follow, but provided for them out of their resources.
Fast forward two thousand years. We see missionaries from around the world going to bring Christ to foreign lands. The missionaries teach the Word, offer food and medicine, and help to provide shelter. But these missionaries often need assistance from others. It's the resources from those outside the inner circle that make the entire experience possible. So when you're at church, and you hear about a mission trip that a handful of parishioners are taking, they probably need resources that you might be able to provide.
