Measure Carefully

By John Morris
In today's reading, Jesus begins addressing his apostles about lights, bushels and lampstands.  He's saying two things...

Mark 4:21-22

He said to them, "Is a lamp brought in to be placed under a bushel basket or under a bed, and not to be placed on a lampstand. For there is nothing hidden except to be made visible; nothing is secret except to come to light."

In today's reading, Jesus begins addressing his apostles about lights, bushels and lampstands.  He's saying two things.  First, we should let our light shine for others. Second, that God sees all, both in the light and in darkness.  Within this context he goes on to talk about what we hear, referencing his teachings to them.  He basically is saying that the more we understand about the fullness of God and use this wisely, the closer we will grow to him.  With that closeness comes grace and a greater understanding of the teachings.  As we grow in knowledge and wisdom, we learn more and understand the greater good in allowing our spiritual light God has graced us with to shine for others.  Conversely, the less we share of God's grace, the less we will receive in return.  We should always be thirsting for more growth and development of our spiritual lives; otherwise we will grow weary and our faith will die.  Our light will be covered by the world's darkness.
