Matthew 5:7
Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.
Mercy is not something I think about a lot these days. I remember growing up and thinking about it often. Mostly because I was always in trouble and wanted my parents to show mercy. Then again when I was a parent of young children, having those roles reversed. But now as I live a single life with no children around me what does mercy look like? As we celebrate the Year of Mercy that Pope Francis has declared I have been challenged to redefine mercy in my everyday life. Lately it looks like having more patience with people driving through traffic. Being in less of a hurry when there is a coupon clipping mom in front of me at the checkout line. Not interpreting that shortly worded text or email from a coworker as sarcastic or aggressive. I have found many little ways in my life where I can show mercy. In the process I have found that people around me are more forgiving of my annoying little actions. There may be something big in your life that needs a little mercy right now. If so get on it! I encourage you to also look for little ways you can show mercy to others today.
p.s. Today's Gospel reading is the beatitudes. I would also encourage you to read through them again. It's a great reminder of God's love for us!
