Follow the Sound

By John Morris
I have a friend who is a cattle....

John 10:27

My sheep know my voice, says the Lord; I know them, and they follow me.

I have a friend who is a cattle rancher and farmer.  He lives out in the woods in rural Florida.   I've always been amazed at how he works the cattle and how the cattle respond to him.  When I've tried to move the cows, they just look at me and stubbornly move along.  But when my buddy talks to them, be it voice, hand motions or just the banging of a pot, they know what he wants.  They even know the difference between his truck and four-wheeler and mine.  They hear the engine of his truck start, and they know its time to feed up.  These cows have been near him all of their lives, from the day they were born until they leave his property.

In today's gospel antiphon, Jesus says that his sheep know his voice and they follow him.  For me, the key is two-fold.  First we have to know Jesus and his voice.  If we don't know Jesus, then why would we follow?  Next, we have to be patient and open to hearing his voice.  In our busy, cluttered world, it is hard to hear Jesus unless we pause for a time, ask Jesus to speak to us, and then listen.  This sounds easy but it's not.  We also have to discern if it's the voice of Jesus, or our ego, or something else distracting us.  But once we listen and can know that it is Jesus, then the following is generally pretty easy.  That doesn't mean that its smooth sailing, but by following the Good Shepherd, we are assured of an eternal life in Christ.  Spend some time today in quiet, asking the Lord to speak to you.  Then see what he reveals to your heart.
