Luke 10:41-42
The Lord said to her in reply, "Martha Martha you are worried and anxious about many things. There is need of only one thing.
In this Gospel passage Martha most likely prepared the food and fixed the table. She may have been sweeping and cleaning and if she was like I am, she was exhausted by the time the dinner was served. And her house guest was.. Jesus!! Jesus always had something engaging to say and I think the people at that time would have listened intently to his every word.
I have had to learn to pray when I expect guests even if by taking that time to pray and gather my thoughts, I have to leave undone details that I wanted finished in order to impress my friends. I'll have the food prepped, the house spotless, and I want them to think that I am "oh so put together". But what if I am so tired that I cannot even remember the conversations during the meal or enjoy dessert after?
What I learned through prayer is that my friends really don't care and probably didn't even notice whether or not I swiffered the stairs or Windexed that hall mirror. I have also learned to appreciate the time well spent in engaging conversation, and the importance of prepping with prayer.
