An Understanding Heart

By Elle
When I go to prayer I often have a long list of prayer intentions, of worries. There are the busy things I "need to do" that compete for my prayer time...

1 Kings 3:9

Give your servant, therefore, a listening heart to judge your people and to distinguish between good and evil. For who is able to give judgment for this vast people of yours?

Solomon, the son of David and Bathsheba and a great king of Israel, has a very humble answer to God's statement in a dream: "Ask something of me and I will give it to you."  Wow. I do not know about you but I can think of lots of things I would ask for. Solomon asked for wisdom and understanding so he could rule over his people. And God gave him wisdom, understanding and even more: "in addition I give you what you did not ask for. " 1 Kings 3:12-13.

When I go to prayer I often have a long list of prayer intentions, of worries. There are the busy things I "need to do" that compete for my prayer time. It is difficult for me to quiet all that down and seek to hear only God's voice, or to feel His presence while in prayer.

I wonder what would change if we put all of our worries and anxieties aside, all of our lists aside, and simply asked God in prayer today for a deeper discernment between right and wrong and an understanding heart?  Maybe we would get that and even more  like Solomon did.
