Crossing the path of the cross
"What does the cross mean to you? In today's culture the word cross has a lot of different meanings, and it can bring about a lot of different emotions. If you cross your eyes too long, you'll be in pain. If you stop at a railroad crossing, you show awareness. If you cross something off a wish list, you're making a sacrifice. If you cross your heart, you're making a promise. If you cross your fingers you're showing hope. If you cross in a crosswalk, you're striving for safety. If you do the crossword, you're growing in wisdom. Cross-examine a witness, and you're discovering the truth. Cross the finish line first, and you are victorious. St. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 1:17, "He preaches the gospel, so that the cross of Christ might not be emptied of its meaning." Because the cross means all of these things, because the cross is love; and because it means all of these things, love means pain and awareness, sacrifice and promise, hope and safety, wisdom and truth, and indeed victory. So today, this day as you pick up your cross, remember that He picked up His. And if you look around you to see Christ in one another, you will have your paths "cross."
