Pope Francis on Tuesday appointed a new bishop to the Diocese of Malang in Indonesia. Carmelite priest Fr. Henricus Pidyarto Gunawan, the Rector of the Philosophical and Theological Higher Institute ‘Widya Sasana’ in Malang is the new Bishop of Malang. He takes over from 77-year old Carmelite Bishop Herman Joseph Sahadat Pandoyoputro, who has retired. Fr. Gunawan, 61, was born on July 13, 1955 in Malang. After his training at the minor seminay he pursued his philosophical studies at the Philosophical and Theological Higher Institute ‘Widya Sasana’ of Malang. He made his solemn profession as a Carmelite on Jan. 18, 1981, and was ordained to the priesthood the following year on Feb. 7 in Malang. Sent to Rome for higher studies, he obtained a licentiate in Sacred Scriptures in 1986 from the Jesuit-run Pontifical Biblical Institute, and a doctorate in Biblical Theology in 1990 from the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas, also known as the Angelicum.
He made his solemn profession as a Carmelite on Jan. 18, 1981. Since his priestly ordination on Feb. 7 the following year, he has held several academic and pastoral responsibilities. Since 1986, he has been professor of Sacred Scriptures at Philosophical and Theological Higher Institute ‘Widya Sasana’ in Malang; vice rector of the Indonesia Biblical Society (1991-1996); vice rector of the Philosophical and Theological Higher Institute ‘Widya Sasana’ (1991-2000); member of the Carmelite Institute of Rome (1996-2000); Director of the Indonesia Biblical Society (1996-2004); parish priest of 'St. Andrea Tidar' in Malang (1999-2000); rector of the Philosophical and Theological Higher Institute 'Widya Sasana' (2000-2004); Member of the Spirituality Committee of the Carmelite Institute in Rome (2001-2007); director of the postgraduate programme of the Philosophical and Theological Higher Institute 'Widya Sasana' (2004-2012): since 2012, rector of the Philosophical and Theological Higher Institute 'Widya Sasana'.

OHA on March 20 released its 2023 assisted suicide data summary that reported a considerable increase in suicide prescriptions in 2023. The study found that assisted suicide prescriptions in the state rose from 433 in 2022 to 560 last year.Of those 560 prescriptions, 367 people are known to have died from ingesting the suicide "medications."
