The Church in Kenya has launched the 2016 National Lenten campaign with a huge procession through the town of Ngong right through to the main Cathedral of St. Joseph the Worker.

The event was attended by the Bishop of Ngong Diocese, John Oballa Owaa; representatives from the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (AMECEA); officials of the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB); many Kenyan government officials and the Catholic faithful of Kenya.

In his homily during the launch of the Lenten Campaign at St. Joseph the Worker Cathedral, the Chairman of the Catholic Justice and Peace Commission of KCCB, Bishop Cornelius Korir said Kenya is a blessed country and her people, beginning with her leaders, needed to shun corruption, negative ethnicity and radicalization that tears the country apart. The CJPC Chairman called on Kenyans to embrace oneness, tolerance of one another and to strive towards the creation of job opportunities for the youth.

The Bishop further urged Kenyans to make Kenya a peaceful, prosperous and a stable country that promotes dialogue, reconciliation and forgiveness especially during this jubilee year of Mercy announced by Pope Francis.

Referring to Pope Francis’ Lenten message, Bishop Korir reiterated that “the season of Lent in this jubilee year be lived more intensely as a privileged moment to celebrate and experience God’s mercy.” The Bishop called upon Kenyans to forget their past differences and to forgive and love one another as the country moves towards the general elections of 2017.

Bishop Korir further added that during the season of Lent, the Catholic Church calls her faithful to be in fellowship and solidary with their brothers and sisters who are less fortunate. The faithful are therefore encouraged to support the Church through prayer, self-denial and almsgiving.

In the same spiritual mood of Lent, the Bishop challenged Kenyans to reflect on the themes of a responsible citizenry, care for the environment, family values and on how best to eradicate insecurity and corruption in the country.

Lent is a 40-day period of fasting, prayer and penance before Easter. In the Christian tradition, this is the period of the liturgical year from Ash Wednesday to Palm Sunday. This annual commemoration prepares the faithful for the celebration of the Lord’s resurrection at Easter.
