(Vatican Radio) The Catholic aid agency Caritas Pakistan has condemned Wednesday’s deadly attacks by Islamic militants at a university in the northeast of the country.

“The whole nation is in shock,” said Amjad Gulzar, National executive director for Caritas Pakistan, in an interview with Vatican Radio hours after the attack against the Bacha Khan University in Charsadda town.

“We condemn this brutal act,” he said, adding: “The whole nation needs to be united.”

Listen to Ann Schneible's interview with Amjad Gulzar:

At least 20 people have been killed after militants stormed the university  soon after it opened. Students, guards, policemen, and at least one teacher are listed among the confirmed dead.

Police say dozens of people were also wounded in the attack, and that four gunmen had been killed.

The siege on the university comes days after some schools closed in Peshawar amid reports of potential terrorist attacks.

“This is something that is frightening to the students and the parents,” he said.

“It’s really sad in Pakistan that the educational institutions and innocent students and the children and the teachers are being targeted.”

Wednesday’s attack comes little more than a year after a similar attack against a school in Peshawar in 2014 which left 134 dead, most of whom were children.
