The report focused on "allegations of abuse that took place in the Diocese of Gaylord," the office said at the time. The abuse allegations, many of them decades old, highlighted claims against nearly 30 priests in that diocese, the majority of whom were "known or presumed" to be dead. Of the 12 living priests, "three are in active ministry" with the diocese, the report said. In a statement this week, Gaylord Bishop Jeffrey Walsh sa...
null / Credit: Paul Vinten/ShutterstockRome Newsroom, Feb 1, 2024 / 14:30 pm (CNA).Pope Francis has centered his Lenten message for 2024 on the Book of Exodus, choosing "Through the Desert God Leads Us to Freedom" as its main theme to encourage the faithful that the season is a journey from bondage to spiritual renewal and freedom. The pope framed this reflection on the departure of the Israelites from Egypt, a story that not only represents the journey from bondage to emancipation but also of revelation and spiritual freedom. "When our God reveals himself, his message is always one of freedom," the pope said. The Holy Father went on to note that this process "is a demanding one" and that "it is not answered straight away. It has to mature as part of a journey.""We realize how true this is at those moments when we feel hopeless, wandering through life like a desert and lacking a promised land as our destination. Lent is the season of grace in which the desert can...
null / roibu / Shutterstock.St. Louis, Mo., Feb 1, 2024 / 07:00 am (CNA).Amid a flurry of abortion-related referenda being pushed in states across the country this year, Republican lawmakers in Mississippi and Missouri are attempting to mitigate proposed pro-abortion initiatives in favor of the strong pro-life laws currently in force. Under a proposal passed in late January by the Mississippi House of Representatives, Mississippians would be prevented from placing an initiative on the statewide ballot to change the state's abortion laws. The proposal is part of a broader effort by Mississippi lawmakers to revive the state's process of getting referenda on the ballot after its previous method was struck down by the state Supreme Court in 2021. Mississippi's law that makes abortion illegal after 15 weeks, which has since been superseded by a law making virtually all abortions illegal, was the subject of the Supreme Court case that ultimately overturned Roe v. ...

The Supreme Court of the United States, Oct. 7. 2022. / Credit: Public DomainCNA Staff, Jan 31, 2024 / 15:24 pm (CNA).The U.S. Supreme Court announced Monday that oral arguments in a high-stakes abortion pill case will be heard on March 26. The decision in the case could determine whether the abortion pill mifepristone can be prescribed by telemedicine or sent through the mail. The Biden administration is challenging a federal court ruling that found that the Federal Drug Administration (FDA) did not follow proper testing and safety protocols when it approved the abortion drug in 2000. Mifepristone is the first of the two abortion pills that cut off progesterone from the baby, essentially starving the child to death. In August 2023, the Fifth Circuit Court affirmed a lower court ruling that the FDA must reinstate restrictions on the mifepristone pill in place before 2016. Those restrictions are currently on hold pending the Supreme Court's decision. The ...
