The Catholic Bishops of Ibadan Ecclesiastical Province in Nigeria have stressed the importance of the on-going Jubilee Year of Mercy in the face of injustice, violence and bloodshed in the country. In a communiqué issued at the end of their Second Plenary Meeting, the bishops called on Nigerians to use this period to seek God’s mercy, to be merciful and to communicate God’s mercy. The bishops also called for the strengthning of initiatives that promote life and the family, as well as the provision of a holistic education for Nigerians even in the most remote areas “in spite of the unjust take-over of schools and the meagre resources available.”Below is the full communique which also discusses the current sociopolitical situation in the country and the need to strengthen inter-religious dialogue. Communique issued at the end of the Second Plenary Meeting of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Ibadan Ecclesiastical Province held at the Jubilee...
(Vatican Radio) Pope Francis on a cold Wednesday morning in Rome greeted the thousands of people in the warmth of the Paul the VI hall who had gathered for his General Audience.The Holy Father, during his Catechesis focused his attention on Week of Prayer for Christian Unity which is currently underway. (Vatican Radio)  Poland's prime minister has condemned the European Union for looking into the country's recently adopted constitutional court and media legislation which the EU's executive, the European Commission, says may be a threat to democracy and the rule of law. (Vatican Radio)  Archbishop Bernardito Auza, Apostolic Nuncio and Permanent Observer of the Holy See to the UN, addressed the UN Security Council on Tuesday, calling for the protection of civilians in armed conflict and thanking frontline countries for their aid to persons in conflict zones.He reminded the Security Council of the disastrous effects of conflict on civilians, including children casualities, distruction of schools and hospitals, and deprivation of food.Archbishop Auza then asked the Council to consider six points crucial to the Holy See's call for the elimination of violence against civilians:1.
